We make Waltermelon. To compare, we used WaterMinder's iPhone app on the free plan and read its store listings and help center. Links are in the Sources section at the end.
Why choose Waltermelon over WaterMinder
- No ads, on any plan. WaterMinder's free version shows full-screen ads. In our test, trying to log a coffee played a 45-second game ad that couldn't be closed. Waltermelon has no ads at all.
- Coffee and tea are free, with no ads. In WaterMinder's free iPhone app, each drink other than water needs an ad, or Premium. In Waltermelon, water, coffee and tea are free to log with no ads, each counted by how much it really hydrates, and caffeine tracking is free too.
- Track your water with friends. In WaterMinder, friends see today's total and what's left. In Waltermelon, you see each friend's streak and progress, plus their week on their profile, and you can cheer them on or nudge them with one tap.
- Challenges you do together. Start a challenge with friends, pick its type and length, and if the group makes it, everyone earns Drops. A 3- or 7-day daily goal challenge is free, and joining a friend's challenge is free. WaterMinder's challenges are solo.
- AI drink logging: just type it. With Premium, type "iced oat milk latte, 16 oz" and Waltermelon fills in the hydration value, caffeine and sugar. In WaterMinder you pick from the list or build a custom cup by hand.
- Alcohol counts for what it really does. In Waltermelon, alcohol lowers your total. In WaterMinder, beer counts as 0.9 of water by default, so a night out still adds to your water total.
- More free features. All reminders, widgets that log a drink in one tap, and charts are free in Waltermelon. In WaterMinder, smart and interval reminders, logging widgets and detailed stats are Premium.
- A goal that fits you. Your daily goal takes your age and sex into account. In our test, changing sex didn't change WaterMinder's goal.
What WaterMinder has that we don't (yet)
- More devices. WaterMinder has a standalone Apple Watch app (with Premium), a Mac app, and runs on Wear OS and Apple Vision Pro. Waltermelon runs on iPhone and Android; on iPhone you can log from widgets or with Siri without opening the app.
- Nutrients. Since June 2026 WaterMinder tracks up to 17 nutrients from drinks on iPhone, including electrolytes, and syncs them to Apple Health. Waltermelon tracks caffeine, sugar and alcohol.
- A long track record. On the App Store since 2013, an Editors' Choice pick, with about 35,000 US ratings.
Logging drinks other than water
Both apps count drinks by how much they hydrate. The difference is what you get for free: in WaterMinder's free iPhone app, you watch an ad for each drink other than water or pay for Premium, while Waltermelon gives you water, coffee and tea with no ads, caffeine included. In Waltermelon the other 17 built-in drinks and AI logging of any drink you type are Premium, with up to 60 AI lookups a day.
Plans and pricing
Both apps are free to download, with optional Premium.
- Waltermelon: weekly and yearly plans. The yearly plan comes with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers on iPhone and Android. No ads, on any plan.
- WaterMinder: yearly and monthly subscriptions with a 7-day free trial, plus a lifetime purchase on its Mac app. Its iPhone paywall lists other drinks, caffeine and alcohol tracking, smart reminders, widgets, the Apple Watch app, detailed stats, editing history, dark mode and removing ads as Premium. Ads can also be removed with a separate purchase.
Prices change by country and over time, so check the current price on the App Store or Google Play.
Which one should you pick?
Choose Waltermelon if:
- you don't want ads;
- you drink coffee or tea and want to log them without paying or watching ads;
- you want to keep each other on track with friends and take on challenges together;
- you'd rather type a drink than look for it in a list;
- you want reminders, widgets and caffeine tracking for free.
WaterMinder may suit you better if you need the app on an Apple Watch, a Mac or a Wear OS watch, or want to track electrolytes and other nutrients, and you're fine paying for Premium.
